Australia’s First All Abilities Indoor Skydiving Competitors

This Friday and Saturday (24/25 August) iFLY Indoor Skydiving Sydney West will play host to the Australian Open Indoor Skydiving Championships. A family friendly, spectacular event FREE for all Sydney-siders to come and enjoy.

iFLY Indoor Skydiving (Sydney, Gold Coast & Perth) prides itself on offering facilities and experiences that are 100% accessible and inclusive for all people of all abilities, and is thrilled to have Australia’s first all-ability competitors, Peter Pellegrini and Bek Cramp, confirmed to compete.

Peter Pellegrini

In 2015 Pete was involved in a tragic workplace accident resulting in the loss of his right leg and leaving him wheelchair bound. 2 years ago Pete turned to indoor skydiving as an alternative form of aqua-therapy and cardio exercise.

“I was unable to do the aqua-therapy because of risk of infection, but indoor skydiving {I believe} worked better in helping me build strength in my muscles. It also helped with the cardio aspect of exercise which I couldn’t gain from other training methods due to my mobility limitations.” said Peter.

“Indoor skydiving has not only taught me to fly all over again, but has shown me how to LIVE all over again. I want to meet other all-ability people and share my story with them and hopefully encourage them to think ‘I can do that too!’. Choosing this sport has changed my life and I hope changes the general public’s views on disabilities.” continues Peter.

“I am humbled and extremely proud to be able to push a mandate that promotes including all-abilities in sport and not pushing us away or segregating us from main stream events,” states Peter. “iFLY Indoor Skydiving approaches it with a no boarders, all-inclusive attitude, which is so rare for people like me; to be included as an equal is so important and what iFLY is doing for this community is indescribably awe-inspiring”.

Pete 250x150

Bek Cramp

Bek’s first flight experience was on 3rd December 2017 at the “Gift Of Flight For All Abilities” event where

iFLY gave away 100 free indoor skydiving experiences to people living with a disability in celebration of International Day of People with Disability – more information here.

“I was hooked instantly. We have flown at least twice a month ever since.” said Bek.

“I love how genuinely dedicated iFLY is to promoting inclusion for all people regardless of age or (dis)ability. I’ve met some amazing people who have encouraged me to learn to fly my body my way. Since losing a lot of my mobility I have missed being active and flying at the tunnel has allowed me to feel part of a sporting community again. Flying at iFLY gives me periods of freedom.” continues Bek.

“I have truly loved watching friends of mine with various disabilities try flying for the first time and watching their abilities be fostered and their flying improve with each flight. Ladies Night has kept me coming back with Elise and Izaya being amazing motivators and some awesome women who jump in to fly with me. I have relished the opportunity to train intensely with Laurence and the team learning about 4 way formation flying and am sure taking part in the Australian Open Indoor Skydiving Championships as part of one of the All Abilities teams is going to be a genuine highlight.”

Bek 2 250x150

24th August 2018

Peter and Bek will be competing in the 4 Way Formation Skydiving (Rookie) category on Friday, 24th August from 10am.

Peter Pellegrini and team – 7 Left Feet

Bek Cramp and team – All My Spoons

25th August 2018

Elise Brown ready to dive into competition

Story by the Wollondilly Advertiser.

Elise Brown first jumped out of a plane at just nine years old.

Born into a family of skydivers this was nothing too strange for the Narellan teen.

However it was indoor skydiving that stole Brown’s heart.

“I was given an indoor skydiving voucher for my birthday and I just loved it,” the 18-year-old said.

“It was around the time I could go for my skydiving licence but I realised I could learn a lot more at indoor skydiving.”

Brown will represent NSW at the 2018 Australian Open Indoor Skydiving Championships on August 24 and 25.

She will compete in the Adult Freestyle Open section.

“We get judged on difficulty and how the moves are presented,” she said.

“I will do three routines, one is freestyle set to one minute of music the other two have compulsory moves that we all have to do so everyone gets judges on the same maneuvers.”

Brown will also head to Bahrain to represent Australia in the third FAI (Federation Aeronatique Internationale) World Cup of Indoor Skydiving.

Indoor skydiving is an emerging sport which has been growing in popularity in the past few years.

Brown said efforts were under way to have it included in the Olympics.

“It’s a great sport because it’s forever changing,” the former Elderslie High School student said.

“There is always something new to learn and people coming up with new ways to push the boundaries.”

While it sounds like fun to fly around in an air tunnel, Brown said serious competitors needed to train hard.

“I usually fly between three to four times a week, but I will be flying every night in the lead up to the competition,” she said.

“Anyone can fly but to compete you need a high level of fitness so I also do weight training, strength and resistance training at the gym five to six times a week.

“In the tunnel you only have about 70 per cent of your normal flexibility so you have to work hard.”

Brown urged other locals to give indoor skydiving a go.

“It’s something you just can’t explain until you try it.”

Meet iFLY Perth’s newest sponsored athletes Noah and Cooper

We are proud to introduce our iFLY Perth Junior team, Brother duo Cooper and Noah Lisle as iFLY Perth’s newest indoor skydiving sponsored athletes!

Noah and Cooper

These boys are setting the bar for tunnel flying, starting with Cooper who is the youngest flyer to nail head down flying unassisted in Australia. We asked the boys some questions too, so you could get a little insight into their lives of two champs!

How did you get into indoor skydiving?
“My parents started flying and I thought it looked fun, so we decided to fly too.” – Noah
“I started flying when my mum and dad did.” – Cooper

How long have you been flying for?
“One year.” – Noah
“One year and a half.” – Cooper

How often do you train each week?
“Once or twice a week.” – Noah and Cooper

What are you currently training for?
“Nationals kids freestyle [2018 Australian Open Indoor Skydiving Championships]. Also trying to learn the two-way dynamic moves.” – Noah
“Competing at nationals. I am also trying to learn some new flips and tricks” – Cooper

What have you achieved so far?
“Learnt to fly head down which is quite an achievement! That took a lot of time and energy but it’s great fun once you can do it. I’ve also competed in local, national and international competitions.” – Noah
“Youngest kid in Australia to fly head down.” – Cooper

What are your next goals?
“I would like to fly head down more smoothly like the instructors at iFLY! I also want to place better than I did last year at the nationals.” – Noah
“Do as many competitions as possible and learn more tricks.” – Cooper

What are your hobbies outside of indoor skydiving?
“I love go-karting and hockey outside of indoor skydiving. I competed in the national series for go karting which is a good experience. I’m also keen to do a tandem skydive once I’m 12! Cooper is also into competitive go-karting and hockey. He has a fractured thumb right now but will be back to all his sports ASAP.” – Noah

Everyone at iFLY Perth is excited to have these boys on board as our sponsored athletes. We look forward to watching them grow within the world of indoor skydiving. Come on down and see them at the tub sometime!

Gold Coast Titans visit iFLY Gold Coast

indoor skydiving titans visitCheck out rugby league team, Gold Coast Titans, kick it around at iFLY Gold Coast as part of their teams day out!

Hayden Knowles (Head of Performance for the Gold Coast Titans) is always looking for ways to motivate his team and get them working together on and off the field. So when one of the players suggested sending the team to iFLY for some flying lessons it seemed like the perfect opportunity to have a bit of fun after a morning of training. The best way to motivate your team is giving them a unique experience, and there is nothing more memorable than sending the team ‘FLYING’!

“One of our players recommended this place [iFLY Indoor Skydiving] at the start of the year. My thoughts were let’s get some morale happening; the boys have worked very hard this morning.” – Hayden

Prop and lock forward Titan’s player, Keegan Hipgrave, is at home on a surfboard as he is on the football field and now he is proud to add floating on air to that list. He was excited to report that the boys got a lot out of the experience!

You could instantly see the smile on the clubs funny-man, Konrad Hurrell, who has an infectious sense of humour. The jokes weren’t lost on the staff at our centre, who couldn’t get enough of this high spirits! He admitted he was a little hesitant jumping in at first but soon fell in love with the experience!

“The first time I did it was a bit scared of heights, I finally got to do it, and I enjoyed it. I’ll be back again, and I’ll be bringing the whole family!” – Konrad

We’re finding that indoor skydiving is becoming more and more popular amongst sports teams as an excellent way for players to bond outside of the field.

Hayden was so impressed by the visit that he just had to say a couple of words, check out the video of their flight below.
